Recent rains have eased drought conditions somewhat in Northern New Mexico, and the forest service has opened the Valle Vidal, where fish usually pressured by this time are fresh and wanting big dries...

Northern New Mexico is a smoky and dry place right now, with lots of fires to the south. National forests are closed and there are outdoor smoking bans in effect. The afternoon thundershower pattern has begun though, and with a few good rains we should be back in business. In the meantime the fish on public waters have gotten a nice break over the usually busy 4th of July week. We are mostly fishing private water on the lower Costilla,  Red River, Cimarron and Culebra Creek. Read on for more detailed reports on those streams..

Just a brief note to let you all know that I'm presently running a flats fishing lodge in Mexico, (Casa Blanca) and will be back in July to finish out the season in NM. Check my dad's site at edadamsflyfishing.com for up to date loccal reports, or my blog to keep tabs on this new adventure....I hear I missed an epic caddis hatch on the Rio Grande this spring, but right now I'm up to my ears in permit, bones, tarpon and snook! Until July!!!
